Welcome to Scouting and Cub Scout Pack 376!

We believe that every boy deserves a trained leader. We want to make sure that you understand how Scouting works and that you're properly equipped to deliver a fun and fulfilling program to our youth.  Training is an important part of learning how to become an effective leader.  The important Scouting position you hold will become easier and more effective once you develop the skills necessary to deliver a quality Scouting program.

The Boy Scouts of America provides a wealth of training opportunities at every level of Scouting. Whether you're a first time Cub leader or a high adventure veteran, there's a training course for you. Continual learning is a key to the success of our programs.

In this document you will discover information on what is required in accordance with Cub Scout Pack 4376 rules and those defined by the North Star District, Heart of America Council and the Boy Scouts of America.  As the requirements and the locations of resource information changes, this document will be updated appropriately.

There are a couple of courses that are extremely essential to every adult leader in our organization, regardless of what position you might hold.  If you are going to be in a position where you will be providing guidance or mentoring a boy then you need to take the time to complete these courses.

We are providing some high level information about the courses below.  The easiest, and most effective way to complete them is by taking them online.  This can be accomplished by going to the following web address;

Here is some high level information on the courses.

FAST START ORIENTATION

When new leaders are selected in Scouting, it's essential that they receive immediate information to help them get started. This "fast start" training helps new leaders understand what's expected and establishes effective meeting patterns so that the boys and their families can enjoy a quality program.

As the first step in BSA training, Fast Start Orientation provides the information and resources new leaders need to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow. All new leaders should receive the Fast Start materials when they're recruited and complete the orientation as soon as possible.

There are separate Fast Start Orientations for Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders. They're available in both video tape format and on the internet. Go to the training link for your program (Cubs, Boy Scouts, Varsity or Venturing) to begin your Fast Start course.

YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING

Child abuse is an increasingly serious, widespread problem in society, affecting every ethnic group, socioeconomic level, and geographic area. The Boy Scouts of America has developed Youth Protection training to prepare its leaders to help children who have been, or are being, abused.

The training program includes information for parents, as well as age appropriate videos for youth members. Materials may be used in Pack, Troop or Den meetings to show Scouts and their parents what they should do to prevent abuse from happening to them.

Every leader in Scouting should complete Youth Protection training. The Council requires that at least one adult accompanying the unit on any outing must be Youth Protection trained in order to obtain a Tour Permit.

Youth Protection training is available in video tape format, on the internet, or at various training classes. Refer to the Youth Protection link for online training and class schedules.

This is Scouting (replaces New Leader Essentials)

This course is an online introductory session that presents an overview of key components of the overall Scouting program. Its goal is to help leaders from all program areas understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes This is Scouting only once.  This training is available online at MyScouting

Leader Specific Training

This training gives a leader the knowledge and skills needed for a specific position. Leader Specific Training is available for a variety of leadership positions, including:

  • Tiger Cub leader
  • Cub Scout and Webelos den leader and assistant
  • Cubmaster and assistant
  • Scoutmaster and assistant
  • Unit committee members

Refer to the training schedule for your program (Cubs, Boy Scouts, Varsity or Venturing) for Basic Leader Training classes.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation)

This program is designed for Cub Scout Leaders and Parents.  BALOO teaches introductory camping skills and safety procedures that will ensure a fun and safe camping experience for Cub Scout families.  Pack overnighters are required to be organized and led by an adult who has successfully completed BALOO.  If your pack is planning a camping trip during the coming year, make sure a pack representative attends this training.

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders

This supplemental training course gives Webelos den leaders information and hands-on practice in the outdoor skills needed to work with Webelos Scouts.  Recommended prior to conducting a Webelos den overnight campout.

Safe Swim Defense & Safety Afloat – for all leaders planning aquatic activities

Safe Swim Defense – Instructs on the importance of advanced preparation and planning in preventing accidents and maintaining safety during any swimming activity.

Safety Afloat – Instructs on the planning, training, and preparation required for any activity using watercraft.

University of Scouting

University of Scouting is a day-long series of workshops chosen individually by the leader to help him or her plan a better program for the boys they work with.  University of Scouting, however, is for all program leaders – Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity, Venturing, and commissioner service. Registration forms and further information will be available on the Heart of America Council’s web site.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is the leadership training course of Boy Scouts of America.  Open to adult leaders in all program areas who have completed basic training for their position.  It is the goal of BSA for all leaders to complete Wood Badge within the first two years of their becoming a leader.  Conducted over two three-day weekends, several courses are available each year.  Check the Heart of America Council’s web site for details.
